Through-floor lifts travel through a cut-out, not a hoistway
By code, a through-floor lift serves exactly two stops. The cab rides through an opening cut in the floor, and a floor plug caps that opening whenever the lift is parked on the other level — so the room above stays a room. Footprint requirements are modest: the Luma needs only about a 38" × 47" patch of floor and stands entirely on its own rails, while the Telecab 17 anchors to a reinforced support wall.
Through-floor lifts are different from home elevators
They're often marketed as "home elevators," but a through-floor lift is its own category. Here's what actually sets it apart:
Operation is by constant pressure buttons
A commercial-style elevator goes to your floor with a single tap. A through-floor lift instead uses press-and-hold ("push-to-run") controls — the cab moves while you hold the button and stops the moment you let go. Most people find it intuitive within one ride.
Through-floor lifts are limited to two stops
Because the floor plug has to cap the opening as the lift travels, two stops is the physical limit. If you need to reach three or more levels, that's home-elevator territory — ask us and we'll walk you through it.
Through-floor lifts should include real mobility features
Most people choose a through-floor lift because stairs have become the obstacle — so the details matter. Savaria's models include a sloped, trip-free threshold, automatic cab lighting, a sturdy full-depth handrail and non-skid flooring as standard.

Two Savaria models — different sizes and strengths
If the lift needs to carry a wheelchair or scooter, the Telecab 17 is the one to look at: it's larger, rated to 845 lb, and purpose-built for wheeled mobility. If you're after two-floor access with a modern, furniture-grade look, the Luma accommodates walkers and rollators in a compact self-supporting design. Both are fully enclosed cabs with automatic lighting, constant-pressure controls and sloped entries. We'll recommend the right fit at your in-home assessment.

The Luma is a beautifully simple two-stop lift with a fully enclosed clear-acrylic cab, a full-sized door and recessed automatic lighting — home access that looks like it belongs in the room. Self-supporting, quick to install, and ideal for retrofits.

Telecab 17 Through-Floor Lift
Rated to 845 lb, the Telecab 17 carries power wheelchairs and scooters with ease. It runs on the same hydraulic drive as our commercial wheelchair lifts and travels between two floors through a capped cut-out — no hoistway required.

Compare NowThrough-floor lifts are ideal for retrofitting
A traditional home elevator needs a constructed hoistway — roughly five feet square on every level it serves — which usually means a major renovation. A through-floor lift skips almost all of that site work.
For the Luma, preparation comes down to the floor cut-out and reinforcement of the cut-out area. The Telecab 17 needs the same, plus a reinforced support wall, because its travel tower fastens to the wall on both levels.
